The so-called “Shutdown Fairness Act” failed by a vote of 54 to 45 because it did not reach the required majority. This decision could mark a turning point in the political stalemate between the parties.
The vote followed Republicans’ blocking of a bill proposed by Democrats that would have paid all federal workers, including the military and federal contractors, and prevented President Donald Trump from carrying out mass layoffs during the shutdown. Senate Majority Leader John Thune changed his vote to “no” to allow the bill to be reconsidered.
