When Jihad Shallouf left his tent 4 months ago in search of a bundle of firewood, he did not know that he would be a target for the Israeli occupation forces, who shot him, seriously injuring his foot.
Since last June 16, Shallouf has needed leg surgery to treat a severe fracture and another to extract fragments that have not been extracted since his injury.
Due to the inability of the Gaza Strip hospitals to provide the necessary treatment, the infection formed toxins in Shallof’s leg, which required him to be sent abroad to receive treatment.
In addition to obtaining the required treatment, the young Palestinian dreamed of seeing the street that he was deprived of because he was confined to bed, and carrying his twin girls, whom he was no longer able to carry, as he said in an interview with Al Jazeera.
Shallouf was not the only one who did not find treatment in Gaza. An elderly Palestinian woman confirmed that doctors had to amputate her son’s toe due to their inability to treat him, and then they had to amputate his foot, while he was still bedridden due to running out of medications.
The elderly woman complained of her inability to provide treatment for her son, to the point that she could not provide him with a bed or a wheelchair, in addition to the severe emaciation that affected her, and her falling to the ground several times due to hunger.
Ahmed was not luckier than the two previous young men, as he was going out to get aid to support his family day by day, and he ended up paralyzed from the middle after being shot in the head.
Because of the seriousness of his condition, the Red Cross refused to deal with him and transferred him to Nasser Medical Hospital, which could not provide him with the necessary care, according to what his mother confirmed.
These cases represent the tip of the iceberg of cases in which the hospitals in the Gaza Strip are filled, unable to provide anything due to the failure to deliver medicines and supplies despite the ceasefire.
Tens of thousands wounded without treatment
Palestinian health organizations said that more than 17,000 sick and wounded people, including 5,500 children, are in urgent need of immediate medical evacuation from the Gaza Strip, with the collapse of the health system after two years of war and the closure of the crossings, while Israel continues to fail to adhere to what was agreed upon.
Earlier today, Saturday, the Government Information Office announced the death of 38 Palestinians and the wounding of 143 with varying injuries, as a result of the ongoing Israeli occupation violations.
The office held the occupation fully responsible for these violations, and called United Nations The guarantors of the agreement called for urgent intervention to oblige the occupation to stop its ongoing aggression and protect the defenseless civilian population in the Gaza Strip.
The director of the Medical Relief Society in Gaza, Dr. Muhammad Abu Afash, also said that the health sector situation has not changed since the ceasefire agreement entered into force about 10 days ago.
The occupation has not yet allowed the entry of any of the medicines, devices and medical supplies accumulated on the Egyptian side of the Rafah land crossing, according to Abu Afash, while Israel refuses to restart the crossing.
It is noteworthy that there are about 170,000 injured people who need operations within the Gaza Strip, according to Abu Afash, who confirmed the lack of capabilities to perform these operations, in addition to the absence of necessary medications for patients with cancer and chronic diseases.
