MÉRIDA.- Various users and personnel who work in the Multimodal Transfer Center (Cetram) of Mérida were affected by a tear gas cloud who suddenly arrived at the terminal from the “Luis F. Sotelo Regil” Police Training Institute of the Ministry of Public Security (SSP).
This would have been an accident that, according to several testimonies and a bulletin from the SSP itself, would have occurred during practices at the police academy.
The SSP, as mentioned, sent a bulletin in which it reported the care they gave to two people, but did not explain what happened. At the scene, employees of the Yucatán Transportation Agency and drivers of the Va y Ven units assured that it was a “grenade” that fell in the platform area.
“We think it was an attack. Suddenly this filled with smoke and we all ran. My eyes started to burn and I started coughing, gasping, and I started running outside. Many ran, everyone’s chest hurts, but they came to evaluate,” said a person who was at the scene.
In the Transportation Directorate, it was learned, there were no people affected because, upon seeing the “smoke”, the employees were protected and even the necessary security protocols were activated.

Police, paramedics, firefighters and Civil Protection personnel went to the scene to support the people who were affected, it was known that there were several, although the SSP reported that there were two. The bulletin does not explicitly accept what happened, nor does it explain what happened, nor do they specify what type of gas affected the usersthey simply limit themselves to justifying that their activities are carried out under professional supervision.
At the scene it was learned that it is not normal for these situations to occur despite the fact that you always hear the shots fired by the police during their training, so there were those who assured that they did something wrong and that is why this situation occurred that, fortunately for the users and the workers, did not happen any further.
Detonations in Mérida were part of routine training: SSP
The SSP reported that the detonations and substances detected this day near the Transportation Directorate of the Yucatán Transportation Agency (ATY), on the Merida Peripheralcorrespond to routine training exercises carried out by police trainees at the Police Training Institute.
During these practices, the elements use control tools, training devices and shooting exercises with non-lethal ammunitionin an isolated, controlled area and under strict security protocols.
SSP paramedics evaluated two people who requested the service, without requiring hospital transfer. As part of the protocol, firefighters from the corporation inspected the area and, in coordination with Civil Protection and the ATY Transportation Directorate, any risk was ruled out for the population or nearby facilities.
The Ministry of Public Security reiterated that police training activities are carried out under professional supervision and with the necessary preventive measures.
