Diogo Jota’s heartbreaking final Instagram post as Liverpool star dies in car crash

Diogo Jota paid an emotional tribute to his wife in his last Instagram post just 24 hours before his tragic death aged 28.

Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, were both killed in a car accident which took place in the northern Spanish province of Zamora.

Spanish police have now confirmed that their vehicle suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking another car.

The car burst into flames as it left the road on Wednesday evening, with the pair pronounced dead in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The tragic news comes just less than two weeks after Jota married Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children – two sons and a baby daughter.

The couple had been in a relationship since 2012, with Jota proposing to her in July 2022 at a lakeside setting.

And in his last post on social media, released the day prior to his passing, the 28-year-old Liverpool player shared an emotional video of him and Cardoso tying the knot.

The video was captioned: ‘A day we will never forget.’

Just five days earlier, Jota also shared photos of his wedding on X, posting, ‘June 22, 2025. Yes, forever,’ alongside a series of pictures celebrating his marriage.

Only 48 hours ago, Cardoso released more photos of her wedding-day outfit, labelling it ‘My dream come true’. In the comments, Jota responded: ‘But I’m the lucky one’.

Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 for £40million, had become a vital figure for the Reds and was a key part of Arne Slot’s side that won the Premier League last season.

In a statement on Thursday morning, the Merseyside club said: ‘Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

‘The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

‘Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

‘We will continue to provide them with our full support.’

Tributes have been paid from around the footballing world, with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher posting on social media: ‘Devastating news about Diogo Jota & his brother Andre this morning.

‘Thoughts are with everyone of their family & friends, especially his wife Rute & their three lovely kids.’

Portuguese club Porto, where both Diogo and his brother played, said: ‘Porto is in mourning. It is with shock and deep regret that we send our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who was also our youth player. May they rest in peace.’
