From many of the same people behind Disco Elysium comes a game with an equally odd name, but at least it’s not called XXX Nightshift anymore.
After the acrimonious split-up of developer ZA/UM, there are now multiple new studios who claims to be peopled by veterans of role-playing cult classic Disco Elysium.
There’s at least four such projects, but one of the most promising is London-based Dark Math Games, who have already announced what they initially referred to as XXX Nightshift.
They now seem to have realised that’s probably not the best name for Google or anyone trying to avoid NSFW content, so they’ve decided on a name change… to Tangerine Antarctic.
Not only that but the new game has switched from the isometric camera view of Disco Elysium to being a ‘third person role-playing game’. Technically both views are third person but the new screenshots seem to imply something more akin to The Witcher 3.
‘Set at the World’s End ski village at Mount Hope, British Antarctica, Tangerine Antarctic is the name of the in-game hotel, designed by renown Estonian architect Kaur Stőőr, where most of the games’ action takes place,’ says founder and art director Timo Albert.
‘This is where you are stuck because of the blizzard and must solve the mysterious murders. And Tangerine Antarctic is one of the important characters of this true detective’s RPG.’

The basic concept of the game doesn’t seem to have change from its original annoucement, with you cast as a ‘Patrol Forces Op’ on holiday at the ski resort for the world’s elite.
It’s implied by the original trailer that a revolution is brewing, but you’ll apparently have plenty of freedom to explore and party as you want, only getting involved in solving murders if you feel like it.
We’re not sure the new trailer helps to make anything any clearer, but it certainly is very Disco Elysium in style. It also appears to be implying a lot more spoken dialogue than the original game.
‘A fresh role-playing system that respects your time, trusts your intelligence, and plays along with your every choice. Play a true three-dimensional human being. Combine 20 Traces across four categories to shape your character in any way you desire,’ says the official description.
That also sounds a lot like Disco Elysium, although this time round you’re free to pick whatever detective partner you want to work with, as you engage in ‘social climbing, soul digging, and heart-eating’.
Pre-orders have opened on Steam via Xsolla and if you buy now you’ll get early access, although exactly when that might start has not yet been announced.
