Disney Cruises releases statement as little girl falls overboard and father jumps after her

Disney Cruises has released a statement after a girl fell overboard on one of its ships, and her father jumped in afterwards to save her.

The incident happened on Sunday, when the girl fell from the fourth deck of a 14-deck Disney Cruise ship. Shortly afterwards, her father jumped in the ocean to rescue her. Both survived, and were picked up by a rescue boat after being in the water for around 10 minutes, according to witnesses.

Disney Dream was returning to Fort Lauderdale in Florida, after sailing for four days around the Bahamas. It’s been reported the girl fell when she was leaning on some railing, as her father took a photo of her. A man overboard alert was then broadcast across the ship, and the crew rushed to recover them.

Disney confirmed in a statement that two passengers were rescued. In a statement, the company didn’t explain much more about the incident.

“The crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water,” a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson said. “We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes.

“We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.”

Passenger Gar Frantz recalled: “We watched it, you could see two little things… It was crazy, it was horrific. Another person onboard, Gail Merrick, said: “We came to find out that it was a child and then the father had gone in after the child, so we were watching with bated breath basically waiting for what would happen.”

Speaking of the rescue, a third added: “The Disney Cruise Line staff were phenomenal, the crew, everybody was on it. You could tell they’ve practiced this, hopefully have never used it before, but they were great. The whole thing was maybe 10, 15 minutes, and they safely got back on board.”
