The stepson of Duane ‘Dog the Bounty Hunter’ Chapman has been arrested six months after shooting and killing his teenage son.
Chapman is an American television personality, bounty hunter, and former bail bondsman, who rose to fame starring in his self-titled TV series, which ran from 2004 until 2012. He also later went on to star in other similar series’.
In July last year news broke that Chapman and his family were facing an ‘incomprehensible’ tragedy after his stepson Gregory Zecca, 38, allegedly shot and killed his 13-year-old son Anthony in what was described as a ‘tragic accident’.
Zecca is the son of Chapman’s wife Francie and her late husband. Soon after the death of his son, the family said that Zecca had been placed on psychiatric hold due to concerns he might take his own life.
Now, more than six months on, Zecca has been arrested and charged with aggravated manslaughter.
Police have said that he accidentally shot and killed his teenage son while under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, which happened while the pair were at a UFC watch party at a friend’s apartment in Naples, Florida on July 19, 2025.
The New York Post has reported that officers with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office took Zecca into custody early Tuesday local time after their six-month long investigation revealed he was allegedly drunk and high when he shot his son.
In a statement, police alleged Zecca was drinking heavily throughout the day and, eventually, ingested marijuana while he and Anthony were watching the UFC fight.
While they were there, Zecca brandished his firearm near his son several times, including ‘practicing drawing it from his waistband and dry-firing’ with no magazine in the chamber.
However, at some point the magazine was inserted back into the chamber. Zecca then ‘discharged a single shot’ which fatally struck his son.
When police responded to the shooting, they noted the strong smell of alcohol and saw marijuana laid out ‘in plain view.’
They then tested Zecca’s blood alcohol level, which had reached a staggering 0.116 – which is nearly two times the legal limit in Florida.
‘This case underscores that devastating tragedy that can result from mixing firearms, alcohol and drugs. Our hearts are with everyone affected by this loss,’ Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said.
‘This was a heartbreaking and preventable tragedy’ he continued.
‘Our detectives conducted an exhaustive and thorough investigation, examining every element of what happened through witness statements, forensic testing, subpoenas, search warrants, and more. I commend their hard work and professionalism in uncovering the facts in an incredibly difficult case.’
Zecca has been charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child with a firearm and using a firearm while under the influence.
The former could see him face a life prison sentence.
In a statement, Chapman’s attorney said following the arrest that the incident ‘remains a devastating family tragedy’.
‘We believe Greg loved his son deeply, and that this was a tragic accident — one that has left many lives permanently changed, especially Anthony’s, and Greg’s,’ Joseph Lesniak told TMZ.
Chapman married Zecca’s mother, Francie Frane, in 2021 soon after they’d each lost their respective partners to cancer.
Zecca also joined his stepfather’s bounty team and shared various posts with his son practicing at gun ranges on social media.
At the time that Zecca was placed on psychiatric hold, his family said it was due to the fact he was ‘stricken by grief and not because he feels guilty of a crime in relation to the shooting’.
Chapman also has 13 other children between six different women, four of whom he was previously married to.
In September last year his son Garry Chapman, 24, was briefly fired from the police force for his involvement in a high-speed chase that killed a 17-year-old boy in Alabama.
However, he was reinstated the next month filing a $10million wrongful termination lawsuit against the Priceville Police Department.
