Butane torches come in handy for a variety of tasks around the house, but when the fuel runs out, it’s time to get to work and refill them. Figuring out how to refill a butane torch or lighter can feel intimidating, but it’s a very straightforward process. In this article, we’ll guide you step by step on how to properly refill a butane torch. One of the most important things is to be sure to do it in a well-ventilated area and on a flat surface.

First things first, let’s dive into what butane torches are and what they’re used for.

What Is a Butane Torch, Anyway?

A butane torch or lighter is a device that generates a high-temperature flame that can heat, burn, and melt different materials, including soft metals. This tool has many purposes, but one of the most important uses is in the construction industry, specifically in plumbing, where it is used for welding, repairs, and brazing. Nowadays, butane torches are also used in cooking for melting, roasting, and caramelizing. People may also use butane torches to light cigars, make smoky cocktails, and more.

How to Refill a Butane Torch

When your butane torch is running on empty, be sure to follow these steps:

  1. Find a well-ventilated area and a level and flat surface, like a workbench or table.
  2. Make sure the torch is completely turned off and has cooled down to room temperature.
  3. Locate the refilling valve. This is usually at the bottom of the torch.
  4. Flip the torch upside down with the refilling valve facing up.
  5. Open the valve using a small screwdriver to purge (that is, release) the pressured air within the butane torch.
  6. Open the new can of butane fuel you’re going to use to refill your torch and insert the tip of the can so that it is perfectly aligned with the refilling valve. Note: The nozzle of the butane can should be facing down.
  7. Press the can down to release the fuel and start the refilling process. This will take about 10 seconds, depending on the size of your torch. Stop when you see mist coming out.
  8. Put the empty butane fuel can away and wipe any excess fuel from the refilling valve.
  9. Place the torch upright and let it rest for about five minutes. This will allow the fuel to stabilize before you use the torch again.

That’s it. Now you’re a pro at refilling a butane torch.
