Animation aficionados in Johannesburg, get ready to welcome the travelling Cape Town International Animation Festival in your town on Thursday, 21 August.
Mounting support for the showcase has convinced organisers, JHB Animation Xchange, to extend the Johannesburg leg of the festival to a second day on 23 August. The fantastic news is that the festival is free to enthusiasts. However, online booking is essential.
Cape Town and Durban cumulatively welcomed hundreds of fans who experienced an insightful look into the fantastic world of animation. Dialogue and networking was the trend for the festival. The event launched in Cape Town, travelled up to Durban and will conclude in Johannesburg.
Johannesburg will have the privilege of closing the show. Avid fans need to join the event at the Bioscope Cinema, in Milpark, Johannesburg.
Wondering what to expect at the final leg of the travelling festival?
Here’s a run-down:
- An array of short films by some of the best creatives in South Africa and Africa.
- The launch screening of Rorisang & the Gurlz, the new animated series emerging from the Cabblow Studio.
- A featured talk by Kabelo Maaka, the founder, creative director and animator at Cabblow Studio
Important influencers at the festival had this to say about the event:
Menna Hamdy, director and art director, Giraffics, in Cairo, Egypt said: “The moment I arrived…the festival team made everything feel easy and welcoming. I got to meet incredible people, some of whom I still catch up with and it felt like everybody, no matter where they are in the journey, was open, generous and willing to connect.”
Nick Cloete, director of Minds Eye Creative said: “It’s been an incredible platform to activate homegrown shows like Moosebox and Twende, proving that South African animation has a well-earned place on the global stage. CTIAF is also where we have some of the most important conversation about policy and industry shifts, ensuring that as we create, we also shape the future of animation.”
Kumbi Chitenderu, Writer and Development Executive, Triggerfish, Cape Town said: “I learned a lot from other panelists and speakers, but more than that everyone shared hope and encouragement to keep pushing in this craft that we love despite constant reminders that the market currently sucks.”
