Also in November 2024, Ford proposed excluding Mexico from the T-MEC and returning to the bilateral agreement that the United States and Canada maintained prior to its enactment in 1994, considering it as “the back door for the entry of Chinese automobiles, auto parts and other products into the Canadian and American markets.”
“Free trade has to be fair. Since the signing of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, Mexico has become a back door for Chinese cars, auto parts and other products into the Canadian and US markets, putting the livelihoods of Canadian and US workers at risk, and undermining our communities,” Ford wrote on his X account.
“If Mexico does not fight against this transshipment of Chinese imports, or if it does not at least equalize Canadian and US tariffs on Chinese imports, they should not have a place at the table or enjoy access to the largest economy in the world,” he said.
But the attacks by Ford and Canada had no effect on the ears of Donald Trump, who, even before arriving at the White House, launched a campaign of harassment against that country, despite the efforts of the then Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, to ingratiate himself with the Republican.
