RuPaul’s Drag Race season eight winner Bob the Drag Queen has released a new video addressing a controversial video of him talking about “race play” had resurfaced and caused controversy again on social media – even being discussed by other queens of the franchise like Mo Heart. With the video doing the rounds again and a lot of people wondering why Bob said it and the context surrounding it, the Drag Race legend and podcast host explained again that it was a joke and if he still stands by making it seven years later.
‘I’m not one of those comedians who’s like I stand by every joke I’ve ever told’
@bobthedragqueenHope this clears things up. Also I don’t need wypipo in the comments being like “it’s okay Bob” I’m not talking to yall.♬ original sound – Bob The Drag Queen
Bob the Drag Queen released a new video addressing the Drag Race fans drama surrounding a joke he had previously made about being into “race play”. For those unaware, race play is a form of sexual roleplay where people consensually incorporate racial stereotypes, slurs, or power dynamics into erotic scenarios. It’s controversial because it involves themes of racism, even if all participants agree to it.
Bob explains “I want to talk about something going on on TikTok revolving around me. Seven years ago, there were some jokes on my podcast made about race play. I was saying ‘that’s hot’, and to be clear I was just joking. I’m not one of those comedians who’s like I stand by every joke I’ve ever told, I’m not apologising for a joke. I don’t think that’s the mark of a good comedian – or a good person, for that matter. I acknowledge the jokes were harmful, I see that now.
“Is it a joke that I find funny today? No. Is it a joke that I would tell today? No. But at the time I did tell the joke and I did find it funny. I want to be clear about one thing – I have never in my life engaged in race play. Never, not once. You can search high and low, every corner of the earth and you will never find a single person who has ever engaged in race play with me because it has literally never happened once.
“I know the clip is out there and I’m not denying that the clip was said. It’s not AI, it was my voice. It was seven years ago and I was agreeing with the joke. In the moment I cleared up that I was joking and didn’t do that, but it seems like it’s unclear. At the time I thought it was funny, today I probably wouldn’t laugh at it.”
