Islington has been named the favourite borough among Londoners, according to a recent poll conducted by Secret London.
The survey, which invited Instagram followers to vote on the city’s 32 boroughs, highlighted Islington’s unique appeal, combining vibrant urban life with a village-like atmosphere.
Known for an eclectic mix of independent cafes, restaurants, and bars, Islington also boasts generous green spaces and the picturesque Regent’s Canal, offering residents and visitors a lifestyle that seamlessly blends leisure with city energy.
Secret London called it a ‘dreamy spot’, and Islington’s recognition comes weeks after it was recognised as one of the best places to live in London by Muddy Stilettos, reinforcing its reputation as one of the capital’s most desirable areas.
As of July 2025, the average house price in Islington sits at £684,000, according to ONS data, reflecting its premium status in the capital’s real estate landscape.
Meanwhile, the average private monthly rent in Islington is £2,701.
Things to do in Islington
Islington’s cultural landscape is vibrant and diverse. The Almeida Theatre stands out as a premier performing arts venue renowned for its innovative productions, often showcasing contemporary plays and revivals that attract theatre lovers from all over.
Nearby, the Islington Museum offers insights into the borough’s rich history, highlighting its development, notable residents, and key historical events.
Nature and outdoor activities are also integral to the area’s appeal. The expansive Highbury Fields provides the perfect backdrop for picnics, sports, or a leisurely stroll, equipped with tennis courts and a children’s playground.
Meanwhile, the picturesque Regent’s Canal runs through the borough, offering scenic walking and cycling routes linking Camden and King’s Cross, alongside waterside cafes and boat trips that add to the neighbourhood’s tranquil yet lively atmosphere.
Dining options in Islington are as diverse as its cultural offerings. Upper Street is at the heart of this culinary diversity, featuring everything from cosy independent cafes to fine dining restaurants serving British, Italian, Middle Eastern, and modern European cuisine.
The historic Eagle Tavern stands as an enduring favourite, offering traditional British fare in a lively pub setting that has served the community for centuries.
Angel Central provides a mix of high-street brands and independent shops, while Exmouth Market bustles with artisanal food stalls, crafts, and fashion outlets, often hosting street food festivals and community arts events.
And when night falls, Islington’s nightlife blossoms. The O2 Academy Islington attracts music fans with its range of live acts, or, for a more relaxed vibe, cocktail bars like The Drink Shop & Do and Bar Elba craft inventive drinks and host themed events that make for memorable nights out.
On Reddit forums, locals have praised Islington for its local vibe and food and drinks offerings, with many recommending areas such as Barnsbury, Highbury and Canonbury specifically.
In the subreddit r/islington, one user wrote: ‘Barnsbury is one of the best spots in London. Great pubs, nice parks, good primary schools and nurseries’.

Recently, we wrote about a women-only commune, why London’s fanciest houses are opening their doors to visitors and buying a home through shared ownership.
Another said: ‘Barnsbury area is great. Particularly round Barnsbury Park. Close enough to station and the restaurants on Upper St but far enough to enjoy some peace and quiet.’
And one user recommended Highbury, writing: ‘Highbury, particularly around the park, is lovely. A stone’s throw from the amenities of Upper Street, and the Victoria line, while also having lovely quiet streets and a beautiful park on your doorstep.’
Other popular London boroughs
Trailing closely behind Islington in the Secret London poll was the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in second place, celebrated for its historic grandeur and luxury, and Wandsworth came in third.
Wandsworth’s growing popularity is attributed to its green spaces, cultural amenities, and comparatively affordable council tax rates.
Notably, Wandsworth also leads in relocation trends for 2025, attracting nearly five per cent of property movers in London, signalling a widening appeal beyond its established residents.
The poll’s top ten boroughs additionally included Westminster, Richmond upon Thames, Hackney, Southwark, Camden, Merton, and Tower Hamlets — each representing different facets of London’s diverse living landscape.
