Dredging of the high-altitude port of Progreso is suspended

PROGRESS.—A Federal Collegiate Court ordered the Immediate suspension of dredging and filling of more than 80 hectares in the deep-sea portafter granting a provisional suspension within the protection trial 1919/2025.

The appeal was promoted by activists who denounced effects on the marine ecosystem and the lack of environmental studies.

In accordance with the resolution issued by the Collegiate Court on Labor and Administrative Matters of the 14th. Circuit, it was instructed to stop the works and notify the authorities involved, including the Administration of the Progreso National Port System (He did not survive), which must prove compliance with the precautionary measure within a period of 24 hours, under legal warning.

The Asipona will have a hearing today, Friday, as a result of the protection trial promoted by the works.

About the work, lawyers Juan Andrés Medina Rejón and José Alfredo Uicab Pantilegal representatives of the amparo, pointed out that the dredging and expansion of the port began without the corresponding permits, nor the necessary environmental impact studies, such as the Environmental Impact Statement (MIA)bathymetric and morphological studies of the seabed.

“The measure granted is a key step to protect the sea, coastal fishing and the rights of coastal communities. Dredging cannot continue without environmental guarantees or public consultation,” said lawyer Medina Rejón.

The protection was promoted by communities of Progreso, Chicxulub and Chelemalong with environmental groups, who denounced the absence of a public consultationthe omission of scientific assessment and the cumulative impacts that dredging could cause on the coast and in the marine ecosystem.

The Court considered that the acts complained of represent a risk of irreparable environmental damage, which is why it decided to suspend the work until the legal situation of the project is definitively resolved.

The judicial authority also ordered to notify the defendants and the Asipona Progress, to monitor and certify compliance with the suspension.

Medina Rejón called on civil society, the media and independent organizations to monitor compliance with the court order and demand transparency in the works carried out in the port.

“The right to a healthy environment is a constitutional right. We cannot allow our marine ecosystems to be destroyed without studies, without information and without social responsibility,” the lawyer stressed.

The judicial process will continue in the coming days, when the court determines whether the definitive suspension is appropriate, which could keep the works stopped until the amparo is substantively resolved.
