The smash happened between J22 Burnham-on-Sea and J21 Weston-super-Mare.
A National Highways traffic alert warned of ‘delays of 3 hours against expected traffic.’
While one lane is open past the scene, traffic is hardly moving due to the congestion.

There are nine miles of congestion on the approach, snarling back to Bridgwater.
The crash happened around 15 miles from Bristol Airport.
Traffic analyst Inrix said in an alert: ‘Severe delays and two lanes closed due to recovery work and multi-vehicle crash on M5 Northbound from J22 (Burnham-On-Sea) to J21 A370 (Weston-Super-Mare). Congestion to just after J24 (Bridgewater South). The A38 through Highbridge is also congested.’
