It’s now official: the European Parliament has approved this week new regulations on the driving license that will allow 17 year olds obtain the type B license, as long as they travel accompanied by an experienced driver until they turn 18.
A measure that must be incorporated into national legislation within a maximum period of 3 years and whose objective is to harmonize traffic rules in the European Union, adapting them to new needs.
The agreement, reached between the Council and the European Parliament, also introduces changes in other categories:
- 18-year-olds will be able to obtain a truck driving license (category C).
- People 21 years old can get it for buses (category D) as long as they have the corresponding certificate of professional competence.
Another highly demanded novelty is the withdrawal of driving license for serious violationsas happens in the case of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or causing a fatal accident. From now on, This withdrawal will be valid in all EU countries.
As for driving tests, they will also be updated and will include training on blind spots, driver assistance systems, safe door opening and the risks of using a mobile phone while driving.
A series of changes that younger drivers, those who cannot yet obtain a driving license, have welcomed with open arms. Furthermore, the European Union is moving towards a digital card accessible from mobilewith the option of having the physical format if desired. In Spain, this digital driving license is already implemented from the app MiDgt.
