The commission’s offices are closed due to the government shutdown, which began on October 1, the main reason being the irreconcilable positions between Republicans and Democrats on the financing of health subsidies, discussed in the Senate (upper house of Congress).
The Republican president said he is building a massive 8,400-square-foot ballroom because the East Room, the White House’s largest ballroom with capacity for approximately 200 people, is too small, according to the AP.
The idea of hosting events in pavilions on the South Lawn of the White House also doesn’t please Donald Trump.
At a White House dinner on Wednesday, Trump thanked his dinner guests for being “so generous” in their “contributions” to pay for the ballroom.
Guests and wealthy businesspeople at the dinner promised to hand over $250 million (213.7 million euros) to finance the ballroom, which will come at no cost to taxpayers.
The White House has said it will release information about who contributed money to build the ballroom, but has not yet done so.
The project was announced at the end of July.
The ballroom will have a capacity for 999 people, the US President said last week.
The White House reported that the project will be completed before the end of its term, in January 2029.
