Economy Grows between 1.9% and 2.2% in the 3rd Quarter

The National Statistics Institute (INE) releases this Thursday, 30th, data relating to the growth of the Portuguese economy in the third quarter of the year, which analysts believe will be between 1.9% and 2.2%, year-on-year.

According to economists consulted by Lusa, growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the third quarter should have accelerated year-on-year but slowed down overall, to between 0.3% and 0.6%.

The economic research group at the Centro de Estudos Aplicados da Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics predicts that the Portuguese economy will have grown 0.6% quarter-on-quarter and 2.2% year-on-year in the third quarter, after, in the second quarter, having grown 0.7% quarter-on-quarter and 1.8% year-on-year.

The Forum for Competitiveness, in a note on the situation, indicated that it estimates “that GDP in the 3rd quarter has slowed down from 0.7% to between 0.3% and 0.5%, which will still result in an acceleration in year-on-year terms, from 1.8% to between 1.9% and 2.1%”.

BCP’s economic studies area projects that, in the third quarter of 2025, Portuguese GDP in volume should have grown 0.6% quarter-on-quarter and 2.2% year-on-year, after the growth recorded in the previous quarter of 0.7% quarter-on-quarter and 1.8% year-on-year, according to the most recent economic note.

“Domestic demand will have accelerated in the third quarter, benefiting from robust growth in private consumption and gross fixed capital formation, accompanied by growth in public spending”, the note reads, while “external demand may have contributed negatively to GDP growth in the third quarter, with exports expected to fall compared to the previous quarter, while imports are expected to grow again”.

The CIP/ISEG Economic Situation Barometer also estimates that the Portuguese economy is expected to grow 2.2% in the third quarter year-on-year, and 0.6% quarter-on-quarter.

According to the document, the estimated growth is explained by the increase in private consumption and the good performance of the industry, commerce and construction sectors.
