Whether you’re a naïve newbie fresher or an ancient fourth-year fossil, clubbing unites all university students. But with so much choice over music, location and pricing, WHERE you go clubbing is deeply personal.
Are you into D&B, or would you defend ABBA to the grave? Are you a George Street girlie, or could the Cowgate Londis workers pick you out in a crowd? Maybe you prefer to keep your dignity and just like your bed, or the library.
Regardless of taste, we asked Edinburgh students to pick their favoruite night out for each day of the week, and here’s what they said. Brace yourself for some shocking and some not-so-shocking results. Why Not Wednesday, I’m looking at you.
Icons Monday at Subway
Famous for its venoms and free entry on weeknights, its no surprise Subway is Edinburgh students’ top pick for the first night out of the week. Perhaps not as famous as its Tamagotchi Tuesday sister, Icon’s Monday’s caters toward alternative and queer crowds, as well as your standard club rats trying to forget that Sunday-night-in as fast as possible. Subway’s official promise is to play the “hottest hyperpop and alt pop anthems,” which basically means a rotation of Chappell Roan and Charli XCX. A forewarning, you WILL run into anyone you decide to kiss in here again.

I think the venom might be getting to her
Tamagotchi Tuesday at Subway
Subway’s most popular night of the week, Tamagotchi Tuesday consitently draws crowds from all walks of Edinburgh student life. A personal highlight of living on Cowgate in my first year was being able to get stamped early, leave and then skip that infamously huge queue later on. With a playlist of mainstream favourites like ABBA and the Spice Girls and more venom flavours than you can choose from, Subway is another unsurprising pick for Edinburgh students’ favourite Tuesday night out. And who could forget that beautiful slideshow of pictures guaranteed to push your hangxiety over the edge the next morning?

Who are these divas?
Love Wednesday at Why Not
Who’s surprised really. A favourite for societies, sports teams and Pollock girlies alike, Love Wednesday is an infamous Edinburgh student night out. With a main room playing the same club classics as Tamagotchi Tuesday, as well as an additional “hip hop and rnb” room and a huge smoking area, Why Not has all the space for you to forget your troubles and cling onto the first man above six foot you see. Bonus points if he’s holding a VK in each hand. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking this place is any less cramped than Subway, because it’s wall to wall. But who doesn’t love the pleasant aroma of VBLs and rugby boys, right?

Nightmare blunt rotation
Hi-Society Thursday at Hive
‘Hi-Society’ might be pushing it slightly. If you ask ChatGPT to summarise Hive’s reputation, it comes back with “grubby, cheap and chaotic,” and that isn’t a bad way to put it. Hive is renowned for both its dirt-cheap prices and dirt-covered toilet seats, but that’s no news to the club or those who attend it. There’s definitely a silver lining hidden deep, deep, deep in the bowels of this Cowgate venue, if you don’t mind a sticky floor or two. I’ve always found Thursday as something of a dissapointment for an Edinburgh night out, and with Hi-Society Thursday promising “chart, pop classics and cheese,” maybe I should check it out. Spoiler, I probably won’t.

Looks fantastic
Broke Friday at Liquid Rooms
Kicking off the busier weekend, the competition for the best Friday night out in Edinburgh was tougher, with Why Not coming in a close second. But alas, the low price of Liquid Rooms’ Broke Friday takes the cake. Well, that’s low price as long as you buy your ticket before they go above a fiver on Fatsoma. Liquid Rooms guarantees to get you drunk, and sometimes that’s all you want in a club. Plus, the smoking area has heaters, so what’s not to love? However, dare I say the Edinburgh night out with the most freshers?

Can the two people necking on at the front give us an update x
Bubblegum Saturday at Hive
AGAIN? I could accept Hive winning the best night out for Edinburgh’s somewhat lackluster Thursday, but convincing me to spend my weekend here might be a bit harder. My best guess for the reason behind this result is Bubblegum Saturday’s free entry, incomparable to anywhere else on that night. Saturday clubbing is notoriously expensive compared to clubbing on weeknights, and is much less attractive to students. Hive promises “chart, rnb and pop” as well as the cheap drinks that have become part of their reputation. I can’t say I’m not intriguied. With that being said, if you ever spot me here, no you didn’t.
