In the final stages of early voting and in the run-up to the general suffrage of the municipal elections on November 4, this newspaper asks Latino voters who have not yet cast their ballot to pause to reflect on the important decision they are going to make.
A new election means a new opportunity to make the voice of the Hispanic community count. With each vote we are contributing to strengthening democracy, but also to having the right to hold those we elect accountable later.
Unlike previous contests in the metropolitan area, where since the primaries there was clarity about the dominance of the Democratic nominee who went on to the general election to seal a victory, we have seen how this electoral campaign has taken a different turn as Washington seeks to pull the strings of the process.
As a serious medium that professes independent news coverage, El Diario has reported on the different agendas that the aspirants to direct the destiny of the Big Apple have put on the table.
Although we know that the final decision is in the hands of each of the voters, through this editorial we inform our support for the Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani.
We agree with the affordability agenda of the young politician aspiring to Mayor because we know that the Big Apple is becoming increasingly tougher for the working class. Here there is no longer anyone living on a minimum wage.
We agree with Mamdani’s strong stance to confront the authoritarianism of a federal Administration that overwhelms anyone who does not fit its mold and is a threat to the institutions and principles of a nation forged by immigrants.
Much has been said about Mamdani’s inexperience, however it is necessary to remember that the same was said at the time about former President Barack Obama. We trust that the assemblyman will know how to surround himself with a solid team to implement his agenda.
He has been called a communist when in reality he is a social democratic politician allied with progressivism. That thing that he is going to convert us to Islam has no basis. Mamdani represents hope in the midst of the dark times we are going through. We need a changing of the guard with renewed vigor.
We insist that our Hispanic voters be well informed about the candidates’ platforms. Do not fall into the trap of false content that only seeks to divide and cause harm. You have to go to the polls with a thoughtful vote about what is best for the city and its residents.
