EFF supporters hold vigil for Julius Malema ahead of firearm hearing

Thousands of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supporters gathered in East London on Thursday night to hold a vigil in support of party leader Julius Malema ahead of his return to the East London Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Malema is due to appear for pre-sentencing proceedings following his conviction on charges related to the discharging of a firearm during the EFF’s fifth anniversary celebrations at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane in 2018.

Supporters, many wearing the party’s signature red regalia, sang struggle songs and held placards outside designated gathering areas, describing the court case as politically motivated and aimed at silencing the EFF.

Party leadership rallies behind Julius Malema

EFF Secretary General Marshall Dlamini addressed supporters during the vigil, insisting that the party remains confident in Malema’s leadership and the outcome of the legal process.

“If there is one thing the members and voters of the EFF must know, it is that tomorrow the Commander-in-Chief is going back to Winnie Madikizela House to continue with the work he was elected to do – leading the struggle for the poor and the landless,” Dlamini said.

He added that the EFF views the case as a political attack and will fully support Malema’s appeal against the conviction.

Court appearance follows firearm conviction

Julius Malema was found guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging a firearm, and reckless endangerment.

The conviction stems from an incident in which Malema fired a gun during the party’s 2018 anniversary celebrations.

The pre-sentencing proceedings will determine whether Malema faces a direct custodial sentence or an alternative penalty.

Lobby group AfriForum has previously argued that the seriousness of the charges could warrant imprisonment.

Heightened security expected

Police and court officials are expected to maintain a strong presence around the magistrate’s court on Friday, with authorities monitoring gatherings to ensure proceedings unfold peacefully.

The matter has drawn national attention, with supporters and critics alike closely watching the court’s next move.
