Eight-hour water interruption planned for these Tshwane areas

Residents and businesses in several western parts of Tshwane will experience an eight-hour water supply interruption on Tuesday, 20 January, as the City of Tshwane carries out planned infrastructure work. The interruption will affect customers supplied by the Kwaggasrand and Iscor Reservoirs and will run from 8:00 to 16:00.

The city said the planned shutdown forms part of ongoing maintenance and safety upgrades within the water distribution network. Technicians from the Water and Sanitation Business Unit will install “two double fire hydrants at Waterbok and Lewerik Streets, in Kwaggasrand,” a process that requires a temporary shutdown of the water supply to the surrounding areas.

Areas expected to be affected by this water interruption

The interruption will impact residential areas, industrial sites, and businesses connected to the affected supply zones. The city confirmed that Atteridgeville extensions 28, 30, 31 and 32 will be without water during the maintenance window. Kwaggasrand, Proclamation Hill, Proclamation Hill Extension 1, and West Park, including extensions 4, 5, 6 and 7, will also be affected.

In addition, operations at Phelindaba Brewery are expected to be affected by the temporary shutdown. The city urged residents and businesses in these areas to make alternative arrangements where possible and to store enough water in advance to meet essential needs during the interruption.

The city acknowledged the inconvenience and said the work remains necessary to improve fire safety and long-term service reliability. The city stated that it “sincerely apologises for any inconvenience that may be experienced during this period.”

Call for water conservation

Alongside the planned interruption, the city renewed its call for responsible water use, especially while supply remains constrained. The city appealed to residents “to use water sparingly and assist in conserving this vital resource.”

The city advised households not to water or irrigate gardens with hosepipes or sprinkler systems between 6:00 and 18:00. Residents should also avoid washing vehicles with hosepipes and refrain from filling swimming pools. Simple daily actions, such as closing a running tap while brushing teeth and reducing overall water consumption, can help ease pressure on the system.

The city emphasised that residents’ cooperation is key to ensuring the success of maintenance work and protecting water infrastructure. With infrastructure upgrades continuing across Tshwane, the municipality said it would keep affected communities informed of any further planned interruptions.
