Electricity customers can expect falling network fees in 2026

BERLIN / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – The Federal Network Agency has announced a significant reduction in network fees for electricity customers in 2026. Household customers can expect a reduction of 17.2 percent, while commercial and industrial customers will receive even greater relief. This measure is part of a comprehensive plan by the federal government to reduce energy costs by subsidizing transmission system costs.

The Federal Network Agency has good news for many electricity customers in Germany: from 2026, network fees, an essential component of the electricity bill, are set to fall significantly. A sample of 28 distribution network operators shows that household customers can expect an average reduction of 17.2 percent. This corresponds to a saving of around 2 cents per kilowatt hour. The relief is even greater for commercial and industrial customers.

This reduction in network fees is part of a larger plan by the federal government to reduce energy costs for consumers. A central component of this plan is a subsidy of 6.5 billion euros to finance transmission network costs. This change in the law is currently going through the parliamentary process. Further relief of a similar amount will also be provided in the coming years in order to stabilize electricity prices in the long term.

Network fees are a significant cost factor in electricity supply, as they finance the expansion and maintenance of the electricity networks. The expansion of renewable energies in particular has led to an increase in these costs in recent years. However, the government subsidy is intended to significantly reduce the burden on consumers.

Interestingly, there are regional differences in the level of network fees. These differences result from different cost structures and the condition of the infrastructure in the respective regions. Older networks require higher maintenance costs, which affects fees. Regions that are heavily affected by the expansion of the transmission network, such as the eastern German states and Baden-Württemberg, benefit disproportionately from the reduction in network fees.

The final network fees for 2026 will be published on January 1st of the same year. Experts expect that the federal government’s measures will not only reduce electricity costs, but also increase acceptance for the expansion of renewable energies. This could lead to a more stable and sustainable energy supply in Germany in the long term.
