Employment grows in September; there are 881 thousand more with work

The economic participation of women fell 0.9 percentage points, since the number of unemployed women reached 786 thousand.

Mexico City, October 28 (However).- The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) announced this Tuesday that the economically active population in Mexico added 62.1 million people in September 2025881 thousand more than in the same month but in 2024. However, the number of unemployed women rose to 786 thousand.

In September 2025, the economic participation rate, that is, the percentage of the population with a job, or who did not have a job, but was actively searching for one, stood at 59.6 percent. By September 2024, it was 60.0 percent.

“The employed population reached 60.2 million people (97.0 percent of the economically active population): an annual increase of 820 thousand people. By sex, the employment of women was 24.4 million and that of men, 35.9 million: an annual drop in them of 125 thousand and an increase in them of 945 thousand,” indicated the Inegi.

In a newsletter in which the results of the National Occupation and Employment Survey (ENOE) were announced, the Inegi detailed that according to sex, the economic participation rate of women was 45.6 percent and that of men, 75.4 percent.

Compared to the previous year, the participation of women fell 0.9 percentage points and that of men remained the same.

The unemployment rate stood at 3.0 percent in September. In the same month of 2024, it was 2.9 percent. The unemployed population was 1.8 million people, an annual growth of 61 thousand. Women’s unemployment stood at 759 thousand in September 2024 and at 786 thousand in September of this year.

For its part, unemployment for men was slightly above one million, in the ninth month of 2024, and at 1.1 million for September 2025.

The underemployment rate (percentage of the employed population that sought to offer a greater amount of work time in their current occupation or in an additional job) was established at 7.3 percent.

The non-economically active population (PNEA) was 42.1 million people. This is 40.4 percent of the population aged 15 and over; increased by 1.3 million people compared to September 2024.

The rate of critical occupation conditions – based on equivalent minimum wages, base January 2025 – was 33.6 percent, while in September 2024, it was 36.0 percent. For its part, the labor informality rate was 54.9 percent. In the same month but in 2024, it was 54.2 percent.

What types of employment did the employed population have?

Of the total employed population (60.2 million), 41.8 million (69.4 percent) operated as subordinate and paid workers when occupying a position or job, which represented an annual increase of 262 thousand.

In addition, 12.9 million (21.4 percent) worked independently or on their own without hiring employees: 26 thousand more people compared to September 2024. For their part, 3.6 million (6.0 percent) were employers, a figure that increased by 570 thousand.

Finally, 1.9 million people (3.2 percent) worked in businesses or on family plots, that is, they contributed directly to the productive processes, but without an agreement for monetary remuneration. The above meant an annual decline of 38 thousand.
