LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – AstraZeneca and Daiichi Sankyo have made significant progress in the treatment of early HER2-positive breast cancer with their drug Enhertu. The results of the studies presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology Congress show a significant reduction in the risk of disease relapse or death compared to existing therapies.

AstraZeneca and Daiichi Sankyo have achieved promising results in the treatment of early HER2-positive breast cancer with their drug Enhertu. The results of the studies presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology Congress show that Enhertu reduced the risk of invasive disease relapse or death by 53% compared to Roche’s Kadcyla. Three years after treatment, 92.4% of Enhertu patients were alive and disease-free, compared to 83.7% in the comparator group.
Enhertu belongs to a class of drugs known as antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). These drugs act like “guided missiles” that specifically attack cancer cells and spare healthy cells, in contrast to conventional chemotherapy. HER2-positive breast cancer accounts for approximately 15% to 20% of all breast cancer cases, underscoring the importance of these advances.
In another study, patients treated with Enhertu before surgery achieved a pathologic complete response rate of 67.3%, compared to 56% with standard chemotherapy. In addition, fewer serious side effects occurred. These results not only strengthen Enhertu’s commercial potential, but also validate AstraZeneca’s broader ADC strategy.
The companies are now planning a comprehensive regulatory program for Enhertu. Ken Keller, Daiichi Sankyo’s global oncology chief, emphasized that the biggest challenge will be the time to regulatory approval. However, he does not see the acceptance of the drug as a problem; rather, it must be ensured that countries can bear and reimburse the costs of the drug.
