As Estonian authorities announced this Monday that will shoot down any Russian drone that crosses the country’s airspacea situation that occurred a few weeks ago and which coincided with several complaints from NATO allies.
“We will intercept and shoot down”said Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna at a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Sybiga on the occasion of the latter’s official visit.
Tsahkna highlighted that the NATO has, for two decades, had a protocol to respond to this type of situation and “defend its territory from the first second, from the first attack”.
Referring to the 12-minute air attack recorded a month ago and which Moscow deniedthe Estonian Foreign Minister stated that NATO planes were “ready to act” if an “immediate threat” to the sovereignty of the Baltic country was noted.
“This was not the first time that Russia tested our capabilities,” Tsahkna noted, recalling similar incidents in the Baltic neighbors as well as in Romania byPolandwhere approximately 10 Russian drones flew over the airspaces.
Russia has been accused by several NATO countries of repeated violations of respective airspaces since the start of the invasion of Ukraine by Moscow forces in February 2022, but last month several incursions led to NATO preparing for a possible escalation of the conflict.
