EThekwini Municipality confirms water shutdown from Tuesday

Many areas under the eThekwini Municipality will experience water supply interruption from various reservoirs supplied by the uMngeni-uThukela Wiggins Water Treatment Works Gravity System.

The water shutdown is scheduled to take place on Tuesday morning, 8 July until Wednesday, 9 July.

The eThekwini Municipality said the shutdown is for the City’s bulk water supplier, uMngeni-uThukela Water (UUW), to replace 1200mm diameter sales and check meters on the gravity bulk pipeline.

This includes the repair of a leak on the aqueducts that has affected full recovery of the plant inflow since the shutdown in April.

In preparation for the shutdown, uMngeni-uThukela Water will shut off the treatment works which will result in no water flowing into the City’s reservoirs.

“The City will endeavour to reduce the effect of the shutdown by topping up its reservoirs; however, water availability is dependent on consumer usage. Customers who may receive water during this period are urged to reduce consumption and to use water sparingly.

“The recovery process of the City reservoirs could take up to three days after the completion of the shutdown, with some reservoirs recovering sooner than others. Our teams will be closely monitoring the system to ensure the full restoration of water supply. Water tankers will be deployed to affected areas where necessary,” the eThekwini Municipality said.
