The European Union has agreed on a common position for the upcoming World Climate Conference, which will take place in Belém, Brazil, in November. At a meeting of environment ministers in Luxembourg, it was decided that the EU wants to work for greater ambition in climate protection worldwide. A central concern is the accelerated energy transition, which should not only reduce CO2 emissions but also reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Another focus of the EU position is financial support for poorer countries. They should be able to achieve their climate goals and make the necessary adaptations to climate change. EU states are calling on other countries to submit their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) that are in line with the 1.5 degree target of the Paris Agreement. This target was set in 2015 to limit global warming to as little as 1.5 degrees.
Interestingly, the EU itself has not yet submitted a formal NDC, although it is encouraging other countries to do so. So far there is only a declaration of intent that calls for a reduction in emissions of 66.25 to 72.5 percent by 2035 compared to 1990. EU environment ministers plan to meet again in early November to adopt a formal NDC.
The COP30 World Climate Conference will primarily focus on the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement and the review of the revised national climate plans. The EU and its member states will appear there as a unit to promote their common goals. The conference provides a platform to evaluate the progress made in recent years and to discuss new measures that are necessary to achieve climate goals.
