Ex-Springboks coach Peter de Villiers found NOT GUILTY of sexual assault

Peter de Villiers, former Springbok coach, cleared sexual assault charges in a Malmesbury courtroom on Thursday.

The magistrate found insufficient evidence to convict him. The case began in early 2024 with complaints of sexual assault and crimen injuria. He faced both criminal proceedings and internal party disciplinary action from the GOOD Party. The acquittal ends crucial legal scrutiny, while political consequences remain ongoing.

THE CASE BROUGHT AGAINST DE VILLIERS

The National Prosecuting Authority charged De Villiers with two counts of sexual assault and one count of crimen injuria. The complaints triggered formal criminal proceedings in the Malmesbury Regional Court.

Meanwhile, the GOOD Party suspended him from party activities in February 2024, pending investigation. Internal disciplinary hearings followed, with independent officials overseeing the process. In March 2024, GOOD terminated his party membership and removed him from the provincial legislature.

On 28 August 2025, De Villiers stood fully acquitted of all criminal charges. The magistrate ruled the prosecution failed to prove the offences beyond reasonable doubt. The verdict cleared him legally, though facts of the alleged incidents were not detailed in public reporting.

THE FALLOUT

GOOD Party expelled De Villiers well before the court concluded proceedings. That decision came after disciplinary findings of constitutional and conduct violations. The acquittal has resolved criminal liability, but party expulsion still stands. His political standing remains affected despite legal clearance.
