Colleen Hoover’s new film, Regretting You, has finally been released in cinemas, and while people who’ve read the book might think they know how it ends, the movie version takes a slightly different turn and has a few changes.
After It Ends With Us went viral last year, and not exactly for good reasons, Hoover’s next adaptation arrives with a lot of attention. The last film had more chatter about behind-the-scenes drama and Blake Lively than the actual story. Hopefully, Regretting You will be remembered for the right reasons this time.

The story follows Morgan Grant, a 35-year-old mother whose world falls apart after a tragic car crash. Her husband, Chris, and her sister, Jenny, both die in the accident. And soon after, Morgan discovers they were having an affair. Heartbroken and angry, she tries to hold her family together while also dealing with her teenage daughter, Clara, who is struggling with her own feelings and first love.
And, as always happens when a much-loved book is turned into a film or a TV show, like The Summer I Turned Pretty, a few changes were made along the way.
So, what happens in the book ending?

In Colleen Hoover’s 2019 novel, the story ends quietly and emotionally. After finding out about the affair between her husband and sister, Morgan decides not to tell Clara right away, hoping to protect her from more pain. This causes tension between them, and Clara starts rebelling, spending more time with her boyfriend, Miller.
Over time, Morgan realises she can’t control everything and that Clara needs to make her own choices. Clara also begins to understand her mother’s sadness and the weight of the secret she’s carrying.
By the end, Morgan finally tells Clara the truth about her father’s affair. The two forgive each other and begin to rebuild their relationship. Morgan also finds comfort in Jonah, Jenny’s widower and Morgan’s old friend, and the book ends with the pair quietly starting a new life together.
It’s a soft, thoughtful ending that focuses on forgiveness, family and moving forward.
Then, what happens in the movie ending?

The new film, directed by Josh Boone, keeps the same heart of the story but adds a few powerful new scenes to make it more cinematic.
After the crash, Morgan discovers a locked shoebox in Chris’s wardrobe. Inside are love letters and motel receipts that prove the affair with Jenny. It’s one of the film’s most emotional moments, especially when Morgan, overcome with anger and grief, smashes Chris’s truck in a stormy scene that doesn’t appear in the book.
With time, Morgan begins to heal. Jonah helps her start a small home design business, a dream she once gave up, and their friendship slowly turns into something more.
Meanwhile, Clara focuses on acting and wins the lead role in her school play, Our Town. The final scene shows her performing on stage, with Morgan and Jonah watching proudly from the audience.
The movie closes on a brighter, more symbolic note than the book, showing that even after heartbreak, life can begin again.
