Explore Cape Town: Keurboom Park

Keurboom Park in Rondebosch is one of Cape Town’s public spaces, considered a “green oasis”.

It’s been established in Rondebosch for a few decades and has gone from strength to strength in contributing a green space to the local community and neighbourhoods.

Read more to discover Keurboom Park and its various projects and innovative systems, including how you can best visit there.

Getting to know Keurboom Park

Did you know that Keurboom Park is named after the surrounding Keurboom trees, which are indigenous to that environment? There are various projects on the go to support the maintenance of the park and fundraising efforts towards its upkeep.

A few of the more recent projects include the completion of paving the main walkway and resurfacing of the off-path trails. Repaving the central path also allows better access to those who visit in wheelchairs. The playground was also brightened up through repainting the play equipment and adding new rubber floors for safety.

Pioneering Natural Security Systems

Another project, which has yielded positive results and is one that Keurboom Park is also proud to be a pioneer in, is installing natural security systems through owl decoy systems. This involves their resident Spotted Eagle Owls.

Six custom-built owl nesting boxes were installed in designated spots within the park, and the area around has been made to support the owls’ survival, from ensuring quiet zones and buffers around the nesting areas to perches for hunting, lighting control, and creating a habitat where the owls can hunt for food.

While this project has acted as a natural security system and the park has reported a 50% reduction in security incidents, it’s also been an important wildlife conservation effort, which has seen an increase in owl breeding, with three successful broods reported in 2024, including an improvement in biodiversity.

What to do at Keurboom Park

The park sports a majestic view of Table Mountain and offers a space suitable for the whole family. It allows a range of outdoor activities, such as picnicking, walking, running, and cycling on designated pathways.

Or you can simply enjoy a tranquil retreat from the city’s buzz, whether it’s finding a quiet spot to read or just enjoying the greenery. There is also a children’s playground, and while pet-friendly, there are designated off-leash areas for dogs.

Rondebosch is a beautiful suburb in Cape Town, filled with historical monuments and architectural gems. Interestingly, it was named by Jan van Riebeeck after a cluster of thorn trees on the banks of the Liesbeek River. It’s advised to visit the Keurboom Park website for more information, park rules, and the best time to visit.
