In the last two decades or so, superheroes have taken over the world of TV and movies.
It seems every other day there’s a new sci-fi series or film about a person in spandex thumping evil goons and trying to save the planet from some would-be tyrant.
Honestly, even as a fan of the cape and cowl crowd, it can get a bit exhausting.
But not every superhero show is about the end of the world; some are far more down-to-earth.
And one such show, called Extraordinary, just got added to ITVX.
Created by Emma Moran, Extraordinary is set in a world where everyone develops a superpower when they turn 18, and our hero is Jen (Máiréad Tyers), a twenty-something who’s seemingly powerless.
The series then follows Jen and her flatmates Carrie (Sofia Oxenham) and Kash (Bilal Hasna) as they go about their not-so-super lives.
Oh, and there’s a shape-shifting cat (Luke Rollason) who becomes Jen’s love interest.
Yeah, it’s a weird show.
Extraordinary originally ran for two seasons (around 16 episodes) on Disney Plus from 2023 to 2024 and received rave reviews.
Both seasons have 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics said it more than lived up to its name.
‘True to its title, Extraordinary combines and tweaks familiar tropes into something genuinely unique,’ wrote Judy Berman in Time Magazine. ‘That it also makes Deadpool look about as audacious as The Incredibles is just a bonus.’
Meanwhile, Keith Watson wrote in his four-star review for Metro wrote ‘It stands out from the crowd compared to other superpower shows’.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the series went on to award success, winning the Best Scripted Comedy at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards in March 2024.
Sadly, all this success couldn’t save it from cancellation. In 2024, Disney announced they were not moving ahead with a third season.
‘Disney Plus Original series ‘Extraordinary’ will not be returning for a third season on the service,’ a rep said. ‘
‘We’re so proud of the hilarious, award-winning series brought to life by the incredibly talented British and Irish cast and crew, our production partners at Sid Gentle Films, and the exceptional writing talent of creator Emma Moran.’
After the news, fans took to Reddit to express their disappointment in the decision.
Such bad news,’ wrote Responsible-Speed341. ‘One of the most creative and entertaining series of the past few years. I loved every second of it. Sad to see we won’t get a season three’.
Still, if you missed Jen’s adventures when they were first released, now’s the perfect time to catch up.
Extraordinary seasons one and two are available to stream now on ITVX.
