The family of hiker Juliana Marins has released a statement that confirmed she died after being trapped deep inside an active volcano in Indonesia for four days.
Juliana, 26, from Brazil, was hiking on Saturday, June 21, when she fell off a cliff into the volcano’s crater. She was with a group near Mount Rinjani on the island of Lombok. She had stopped to rest during the climb while the others carried on. When the guide returned to check on her, she was gone.
Rescuers were called and managed to hear her cries for help. A drone later spotted her alive on a steep cliff about 1,000 feet down, but repeated attempts to reach her were unsuccessful. The rescue team faced bad weather and dangerous conditions, which made the operation difficult.
In the days that followed, Juliana’s family set up an Instagram page to share updates and ask for help, quickly gaining support from people around the world.

Family released a heartbreaking statement
Yesterday, June 24, the family shared a heartbreaking update on social media confirming Juliana had not survived.
“Today, the rescue team managed to reach the place where Juliana Marins was,” they wrote. “With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive. We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection and support that we have received.”
Former Brazilian minister Tereza Cristina also responded to the news. She posted on X: “The entire Brazil cheered and prayed that the rescue would arrive in time to save the young woman from Niterói, Juliana Marins, alive. Unfortunately, they could not save her. Very sad. Our condolences to her family and friends.”
She also called for answers from Indonesian authorities, and said Juliana had been “left behind twice: On the dangerous trail and after she fell off the cliff.”
