“Never use fast charging — it’ll kill your battery.” You’ve probably heard that, usually from someone who doesn’t own an EV. The real story is much calmer: modern batteries can take a lot more abuse than the myths suggest, and the data say fast charging is not the battery assassin people fear.
How Hard Is Fast Charging on Your Pack?
One of the biggest real-world studies on this comes from Recurrent, which looked at more than 12,500 Teslas. Cars that fast-charged over 90% of the time were compared with cars that almost never used DC fast chargers. Result: no statistically significant difference in range loss between the groups.

Zoom out to the broader EV world and the pattern holds. A large telematics analysis by Geotab finds that modern EV batteries degrade at about 1.8% per year on average — meaning most packs are still in good shape after well over a decade of normal driving. A 2025 meta-study of lab and field results backs that up, putting typical loss in the 1–2% per year range under normal use.
That doesn’t mean fast charging is totally free. Heat and extremes are still the villains. Hammering the pack from near-empty to 100% on a blazing summer day, over and over, will age it faster. But for most drivers who mix home Level 2 charging with the occasional road-trip fast charge, the impact is small enough that you’ll probably sell the car before the battery becomes a problem.
My Verdict
Use fast chargers when you need them and stop stressing. Keep your car out of brutal heat when you can, don’t leave it parked at 100% all week, and lean on home or workplace charging day-to-day. Do that and the odds are high your battery will outlast your interest in the car. The real challenge with road trips isn’t “my pack is dying” — it’s finding a decent coffee while you wait for that 20–80% top-up.
