When you think of the ultimate comfort meal, there are numerous British dishes that might spring to mind – from stews and hot pots, to dumplings, and sticky toffee pudding.

But you can’t beat the comforting simplicity of a jacket potato, and it’s something one fast food chain in the UK knows only too well, as it’s adding the humble baked spud to the menu.

Subway has announced it’s launching jacket potatoes in all of its UK restaurants following the ‘jacket potato renaissance’ on social media

With a brand new ‘Spudway’ selection on the menu, customers will be able to pick from fillings like the classic Heinz Beanz and Cheese and Tuna Mayonnaise, or Subway fan-favourites such as Chicken Tikka, Taco Beef, or Rotisserie Style Chicken and Bacon.

But the options won’t be limited to just these flavours, as any Sub can be turned into a spud, so people will be able to get creative and add whatever toppings they fancy.

The jacket potatoes can be enjoyed on their own, or as part of a new meal deal which will include a spud and drink, plus a packet of crisps or a cookie.

Individual spuds will start from £4.39 (although this will vary by store), with the meal deal price starting at £6.19.

Speaking about the launch, Cathy Goodwin, Interim Director of Culinary & Innovation Subway EMEA, said: ‘The nation’s love of Jacket Potatoes is unparalleled. The enthusiasm we’ve seen on social media and the strong demand from our guests throughout the trial made it clear that Spudway deserved a permanent place on our menu.

‘Made with British potatoes, Irish salted butter, a double portion of cheese, and fully customisable with any of our many toppings – from our iconic Meatball Marinara to spud staples like Cheese & Beans, Spudway is the perfect freshly-made, high-quality lunch choice.’

This comes after the chain launched a Spudway trial earlier this year in select locations.

While many will likely be excited by the news, Subway isn’t the first fast food chain in the UK to offer jacket potatoes.

Wendy’s also has the humble spud on its menu, with five different options to choose from. There’s the Plain Potato, the Cheese Baked Potato which features a creamy cheese sauce and shredded cheese, the Chilli Cheese Baked Potato which has everything from the cheese one but with added chilli on top, Sour Cream and Chives Potato (does what it says on the tin) and the Bacon and Cheese Potato with cheese sauce, shredded cheese and Applewood smoked bacon.

The chain also recently added a few other new items to its menu here, including one that would likely please McDonald’s fans.

And speaking of Maccies, the chain has just confirmed the return of Monopoly on September 10 and for the first time in the UK, you’ll be able to play the game with your breakfast, as the stickets will be available on the breakfast wrap.
