This morning, the director of the Economic Culture Fund (FCE), Paco Ignacio Taibo IIannounced that the Government of Mexico, in alliance with other Latin American governments, will carry out the free distribution of 2 and a half million books for adolescents throughout the continent.
The writer also reported that this project between the bookstore and the current Administration, through the Institute to Return What was Stolen to the People (Indep)has been planned for 2 and a half years and will be completed in December of this year.
“We had to do a very extensive kitchen work and contacts and relationships and agreements with governments, with second-level government institutions, and it allowed us to draw a map of alliances. For this to happen we had to obtain multiple financing, which the President organized from the Institute to Return What was Stolen to the People, but country by country they contributed.“declared the director.
Taibo II said that there was support from the governments of Colombia, Cuba, Argentina, Venezuela, among others, who joined the project through agreements. From the National Palace, and with great humor, the author shared more details.

“The idea was books for teenagers: we set the age between 15 to 30 years […] We set the collection within the framework of the great Latin American literature of the end of the last century […] Today young people are not reading it and this reading void caused a painful void, so why are they not reading García Márquez, Onetti, Sergio Ramírez? The collection is directed towards them..”
The author and also director of the FCE mentioned some of the difficulties in being able to carry out this collection, including contact with the authors’ widows and negotiations with the publishers to whom the copyrights of the works belonged.

The books will be given away from all FCE branches distributed throughout Latin America. Several civil associations will join the distribution work. About 14 countries will be part of this massive project to promote reading. On December 17, the book boxes will be opened in 200 places in the south of the continent.
