“El Chesman” is related to the investigation folder of the murder of the priest Marcelo Pérez, which occurred on October 20 of last year in San Cristóbal de las Casas.
“Because of the above, there is close coordination with the Attorney General’s Office to execute the federal arrest warrant for the crime of qualified homicide,” the state agency indicated.
The Prosecutor’s Office detailed that the accused is the leader of a criminal group called “Los Motonetos” that intimidated the inhabitants of this community “by requesting money in exchange for allowing the passage of the products they were transporting to sell; when the victims refused they were subjected to physical attacks or damage to their vehicles.”
Priest Marcelo Pérez Pérez, parish priest of the Church of Guadalupe in San Cristóbal de las Casas, was murdered on October 20, 2024 while leaving mass by individuals on board a motorcycle who shot him with a firearm. The father was recognized for his activism in Simojovel, Pantelhó and San Cristóbal de las Casas, in the Highlands of Chiapas.
The religious leader was traveling in his vehicle after celebrating mass at the temple in the Cuxtitali neighborhood and was heading to the temple of Guadalupe when he was shot.
Three days after the murder of the priest Marcelo Pérez, the authorities arrested Edgar “M”, identified as the material author of the murder of the religious, who on August 6 was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
“The Attorney General’s Office (FGR), through the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Human Rights (FEMDH), obtained a conviction against Edgar ‘M’, for having fully accredited his responsibility as the material author in the crime of homicide qualified with premeditation, treachery and advantage,” the agency reported on August 6.
The agency detailed that the now sentenced man was located outside the church, and after following the priest who had just presided over a religious ceremony, he shot him with a firearm.
