Overnight shoots on West College Street, South College Street, Potterrow Underpass, Lothian Street and Chambers Street have been scheduled for June 9th and 10th.
The roads will be closed while filming begins for the film Ghost Writer, directed by J.J. Abrams.
The American filmmaker has worked on big name films such as Star Trek, Cloverfield and the recent Star Wars sequels.
A letter to residents in nearby flats informed them that streets surrounding Edinburgh Uni’s Student Union Potterrow will be used to film “scenes [that] involve running”.
Residents have been told that filming may take place “at dusk, overnight or at dawn”. The letter also states that around 100 crew members and 60 extras will be on set.
Speculation was rife around the project, with many suspecting that Warner Bros were preparing for a new Harry Potter series, but the City of Edinburgh Council confirmed that the roads would be closed to allow for the filming of Ghost Writer.
The film will be bringing some big names to the capital: Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega, Emma Mackey, and Samuel L. Jackson are listed as cast for the upcoming project.
Beyond the cast, Abraham’s has kept details thin, releasing nothing but a name, which may not even be the final name of the film as it has only been confirmed as a working title.
Film crews are a relatively common sight in Edinburgh, with Guillermo Del Torro’s Frankenstein being shot in the capital last year and transforming the Royal Mile into a medieval set, while also sparking controversy as Hollywood hotshot Shia Labeouf was spotted “squaring up” to a resident in Cowgate while visiting the city with his wife Mia Goth who is set to star in the movie.
Other productions such as Trainspotting, Avengers Infinity War, Fast and Furious 9 and Outlaw King have also all featured scenes shot in Edinburgh.
