In Suffolk County, a stray cat in Deer Park tested positive for rabies, marking the first confirmed case of locally acquired terrestrial rabies in a feral cat in the region. This is the 12th case of rabies in the county’s wildlife this year, with 11 raccoons previously testing positive.
Rabies is a viral disease that is transmitted to humans from infected mammals. If left untreated, it inevitably leads to death. Early symptoms include irritability, headache, fever, and sometimes itching at the site of exposure. Within a few days, the disease progresses to paralysis, spasms of the throat muscles, seizures, delirium and ultimately death.
Health officials are working closely with the USDA to implement a raccoon rabies control program. This includes increased monitoring of the raccoon population to identify areas where the disease may be present. In addition, oral rabies vaccine baits are being distributed in the towns of Babylon, Huntington, Smithtown and Islip to prevent the spread of rabies.
The baits contain a vaccine that, when ingested by a raccoon, immunizes the animal against the rabies virus. The goal of the Raccoon Rabies Control Program is to control and eliminate terrestrial rabies in local wildlife populations. These measures are critical to protect public health and prevent the spread of the disease.
