Foiled hijacking in KZN causes one death and several injuries

A foiled hijacking near Amahlongwa in KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast led to an accident that killed one person and injured several.

The IPSS Medical Rescue rushed to an accident scene on the afternoon of 26 August and witnessed an overturned vehicle in the river along the P197. Investigations later revealed that a foiled hijacking attempt caused the accident.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue, a man driving a bakkie along the P197 offered a hitchhiker a lift.

After the vehicle was in motion again, the hitchhiker attempted to hijack the vehicle.

School pupil injured during foiled hijacking

“During the attempted hijacking, the driver lost control of the vehicle, veering into a scholar walking home from school, and then landing on its roof in the river,” said an IPSS Medical Rescue statement.

A police search and rescue team discovered that one of the passengers of the vehicle, which veered into the river, had died on the scene.

Four others, including a scholar and the hijack victim, were treated at the scene of the accident. They were transported to nearby hospitals by emergency services for further treatment.

In a separate incident, a pedestrian was run over by a vehicle on the N1 near Bloemfontein this morning.

According to an Arrive Alive statement, the incident occurred near the Nelson Mandela Drive off-ramp in the direction of Cape Town.

Police are investigating the two incidents.
