England’s victory in 2022 was one of our great sporting moments.
But for their inspirational captain, Leah Williamson OBE, football is about far more than just winning titles.
Right from when she first joined a team aged six, she’s seen the power of the sport to change lives – from kids growing in confidence to adults forging lifelong friendships through a weekly league.
For so many people, football has been the fresh start they were looking for, bringing renewed purpose and a path to being their best, on the pitch and off it.
But as one of the leaders of a new generation of female footballers, Leah knows all too well about the barriers facing women and girls wanting to take up the game.
That’s why, after joining Weetabix’s newly formed team of all-star athletes, alongside Sir Mo Farah, Ade Adepitan MBE and Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill to help the nation achieve their goals bix by bix, she’s focusing on showing football is for them too.
‘The whole of the women’s football community has a responsibility to grow it for future generations,’ she says.
‘The more we make it accessible and visible, the better.’
To discover one example of breaking down barriers, Leah visited Goal Diggers FC, a London football club that gives all women and non-binary people a chance to play the sport, regardless of their experience or ability.
After chatting with the team’s founder, Fleur Cousens, she came away impressed by her success in building a thriving community of more than 200 members.
‘My mission with Weetabix is to help the nation achieve their goals, and organisations like Goal Diggers are making that easier,’ Leah says.
‘My advice for any women or girls wanting to get into football is to join your local team – that’s what I did, anyone can do it.
‘Then get outside, grab a ball and play as much as you can.’
Goal Diggers FC believes that when every player is given the tools, confidence, and support to start strong, there’s no limit to what they can become.
Leah also knows the importance of strong starts, which is why she has Weetabix before every game to help give her the energy and focus she needs to play her best.
Asked by Fleur if she’s ever too nervous before a game to have anything to eat, Leah replies: ‘I do get too nervous, all the time, but it’s not an option not to eat breakfast. They clearly listened, as the team went on to win the game, prompting scenes of wild jubilation.
‘Everyone celebrating together is a beautiful thing,’ Leah reflects.
‘When I look back on my career, it will be the people I remember more than anything else.’
