In an emotional ceremony at the Consulate of the Republic of Poland in Mexico, the ambassador Agnieszka Frydrychowicz-Tekiel posthumously awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland to the architect José Manuel Gómez Vázquez Aldanaa distinction that his daughter María Isabel Gómez Castellanos received in his name.
The architect, who died on October 18 at the age of 88, was honored for his outstanding career and his work as honorary consul of Poland in Guadalajara for more than 30 years, as well as for his role in strengthening cultural and diplomatic ties between Poland and Mexico.
The ambassador highlighted that the decoration was awarded by former Polish president Andrzej Duda in recognition of his “extraordinary consular work, his commitment to economic and cultural cooperation… and his sincere friendship with the Polish people.” He stressed that he was “a great architect, a great professional and, above all, a great person.”
With deep emotion, María Isabel thanked the recognition and officially assumed the position of honorary consul of Poland, continuing her father’s diplomatic legacy. “This honor represents his commitment and friendship that he always promoted between Poland and Mexico.”
The Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit is awarded to people who have contributed to the development of education, culture, science, economics and international relations.
Among the architect’s most emblematic works are the Nuevo Progreso Bullring, the Tapatío Hotel and the Palace of Culture and Communication, in addition to numerous projects in Mexico, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
The event brought together family, friends and members of the consular corps, who remembered the honoree as a visionary, generous man deeply committed to art, diplomacy and his city.
