Ford Motor Company Southern Africa recalls these vehicle models

South African motorists owning the Ford Mustang and the Ford Transit Custom models need to take heed of certain defects that may be harmful in the event of accidents.

The motor vehicle manufacturer (FMCSA) this week announced certain defects in Mustangs manufactured between 2021 and 2022.

The company stated in a media release that the affected vehicles may experience low-pressure fuel pump failure.

In South Africa, 330 Mustangs were sold to motorists with this defect. One motorist in Botswana owns the defective  model, followed by Namibia with two.

Defects in Ford Mustangs explained

“FMCSA has identified that the affected vehicles may lose fuel pressure and flow from the fuel tank due to failure of the low-pressure fuel pump.

“Loss of fuel pressure and flow from the low-pressure fuel pump can be due to internal contamination of the jet pump, specifically in low fuel conditions and reduced fuel pump internal clearances, which result in an increase of internal friction and sensitivity to vapour lock,” stated FMCSA.

According to the motor vehicle manufacturer, the defect may cause no fuel delivery to the engine, resulting in an engine stall.

“An engine stall while driving increases the risk of an accident,” said FMCSA.

Airbags may not function when needed

The Ford Transit Custom, on the other hand, has an airbag defect.

Five vehicles manufactured between 2004 and 2005 in  South Africa have an airbag deployment failure.

FMCSA explains the defect: “The passenger airbag needs to be replaced as a filter within the inflator might not meet the thickness specification. Under normal driving conditions, this issue does not affect vehicle operation. However, in the event of an accident that meets the parameters for airbag deployment, the out of specification filters may restrict gas flow from the inflator.”

South African motorists who own the defective vehicle models may contact their preferred Ford dealership to rectify the defects. Affected motorists may also visit www.ford.co.za/owner/recalls/ for further information.

Business Live reported that 30 000 Ford vehicles were recalled in 2025 thus far.
