France will deliver “additional” Aster anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine “in the coming days”, as well as Mirage combat aircraft, French President Emmanuel Macron announced this Friday, before Ukraine’s allies gathered in person in London and via videoconference.
“We will deliver, in the coming days, additional Aster missiles, new training programs and new Mirage aircraft”said Macron, from Paris, without providing further details.
To date, France has delivered three Mirage 2000 aircraft to Ukraine, out of the six promised, due, in particular, to the training needs of Ukrainian pilots.
One of the devices was shot down in July.
The Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles, produced in cooperation between Paris and Rome, operate with the SAMP/T MAMBA system, a Franco-Italian anti-aircraft defense system equivalent to the North American Patriot.
The two countries have supplied an unspecified number of these missiles to Ukrainian forces for their anti-aircraft defense, who continue to request more units to protect themselves.
“It is very important to maintain our efforts to support Ukraine and pressure on Russia”Macron highlighted during this Friday’s meeting of the so-called “Coalition of the Willing” which brings together more than 20 countries, mostly European, including Portugal.
This Friday’s meeting, which took place in a hybrid format, was attended in person by the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, and the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, as well as the host, the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer.
