‘Friends sent me hate messages’: Squid Game’s Myung-gi responds to his character’s backlash

Though he was a bit of a sketchy character in season two, Squid Game season three saw Yim Si-wan’s Myung-gi turn into an all around villain as he killed numerous favs and attempted to kill his own damn baby!

Squid Game has this unique ability to take very normal people and their struggles and then turn them into outright villains. We saw that happen with Cho Sang-woo in season one, and even Thanos in season two.

In season three, Lee Myung-gi stepped into his villainous role after stabbing Cho Hyun-ju and turning against his girlfriend Kim Jun-hee in the jump rope challenge. You could even argue that his actions in the hide-and-seek game contributed to the deaths of Geum-ja and her son Yong-sik. The final episode really cemented Myung-gi as a real pr*ck as he attempted to kill both Gi-hun and his own child for the hefty cash sum of 45.6 billion won. He failed, though, so joke’s on him!

Still, people are not mincing their words online where Myung-gi is concerned, with one person writing on Twitter: “Both Hyun-ju and Young-mi died because of Myung-gi…this is sickening.”

“Myung-gi does not actually give a f*ck about that baby and never ever did and you cannot convince me otherwise sorry,” another wrote.

Now Yim Si-wan has responded to the hate, but don’t worry, he totally gets it.

Yim Si-wan has responded to the Myung-gi Squid Game hate

You’ve got to be a pretty evil character for the actor who plays you to share in the hate, and there is no one more evil in Squid Game season three than Myung-gi. Actually, maybe Player 100 wins that crown?

Anyway, speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Myung-gi actor Yim Si-wan detailed how even his friends have been calling him out via text.

“Well, I’ve seen the comments online. I also got loads of texts and messages from friends right after season three was released. A lot of them said they really enjoyed the show and found the ending shocking. But even some of my friends sent me hate messages — like, ‘You’re so bad! Horrible! How could you do that?” he said.

“I think I need to love the hate. So I’m going to take it all as a compliment. It’s okay — you can hate Myung-gi as much as you like.”

Rather than get pulled down by the hate online, Yim Si-wan is taking the criticism as proof that he did a good job playing the character. All in all, he’s happy to have been a part of a “memorable experience” like Squid Game.

He added: “At the same time, I think it’s best if I don’t read too much into it and just leave it as a really memorable experience. Instead of letting this huge show reshape my whole life, it’ll be best if I can just maintain the attitude of being a diligent, hardworking actor. I hope I’m essentially the same guy — before and after Squid Game.”

Yim Si-wan seems like a pretty solid dude – I still HATE Myung-gi though.

Squid Game season three is now streaming. For all the latest Netflix news and drops, like The Holy Church of Netflix on Facebook.
