From dark clothes to Converse shoes: What we know about the shooter who killed Charlie Kirk

Right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk was shot and killed on Wednesday, September 10, at a college event in Utah, and a manhunt for the shooter is still ongoing.

Charlie Kirk was at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University when he was shot in the neck by a bullet fired from a nearby building on campus. He died a short time later in the hospital.

The attack happened in front of thousands of students and supporters. Since then, the FBI has released new information about the shooter. Here’s everything we know about the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk .

Who was the shooter?

Despite the massive public and political focus on the shooting of Charlie Kirk, the man responsible remains at large. The shooter vanished after the attack. No suspect has been named, but images and videos have been released of a “person of interest.” The suspect is male and appears to be of college age.

What was he wearing?

The shooter wore dark clothing and fired from a building overlooking the courtyard where the event took place, eyewitnesses said. Authorities believe the shot was fired from the roof of the Losee Centre, about 200 meters away from the stage. According to the BBC, police said the suspect was dressed in all black and acted alone. 911 callers described seeing a person on campus wearing “jeans, a black shirt, a black mask,” and carrying a “long rifle.”

Is there a picture or video of the suspect?

Photos of a person wearing a hat, sunglasses, a long-sleeve black shirt, and a backpack were released yesterday, but this was not confirmed to be the suspect. Several videos from the scene have been shared on Twitter that appear to show possible sightings of the shooter, but none have been verified.

Is there a murder weapon?

Investigators found a Mauser .30-caliber bolt-action rifle wrapped in a towel in the woods. According to the Associated Press, police recovered a spent cartridge from the chamber and found three other rounds loaded in the magazine. The weapon and ammunition are being analysed by law enforcement at a federal lab.

Have the authorities found any other clues?

According to CNN, the suspect reportedly left palm impressions, smudges that may contain DNA, and a shoe imprint on the building he climbed down from. Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason said this led investigators to conclude the suspect was wearing Converse sneakers.

What else have officials said?

Commissioner Mason admitted that there is still much work to be done to catch Charlie Kirk’s killer. In an interview with NBC News, Mason said, “We have no idea,” when asked if the suspect is nearby or even still in Utah, where Kirk was killed. “We’re exploring leads for individuals that live close by,” he added. “We literally have persons of interest, tips coming in on the tip line, that are spanning far and wide.”

In an interview with The Independent, retired FBI SWAT member Dennis Franks weighed in on whether the shooter was experienced. He said, “To do it under the stress of a live situation, he was either skillful or lucky.” Luke Laterza, a retired police sergeant and expert firearms examiner, also said, “This guy had some knowledge of shooting.”

The manhunt is still ongoing, and a $100,000 reward has been issued for any information leading to an arrest.
