At Catholic Charities of Rockland Community Services, your beautiful Garden of Love (aka Garden of Love) serves for grow fresh produce to help feed local families. Right next to the garden, their food pantry provides essential food to those in need, ensuring no one in the Rockland community goes hungry. When neighbors need more support, they are helped apply for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (known as SNAPfor its acronym in English) so that families can continue putting healthy foods on the table.
He SNAPformerly known as food stamps, is the only federal nutrition program available to all citizens and some legal immigrants who meet income requirements. Through your Nutrition Education Program (NOEP, agency coordinators meet individually with community members to share information about SNAP, determine if they are eligible, and to help them complete the application process. With SNAP, eligible households receive a monthly stipend to help cover the cost of nutritious food.
When Greissy Peña first came to Catholic Charities Community Services of Rockland, she was a young mother doing her best to care for her family. She and her partner worked part-time, but were still struggling to make ends meet and feed their two-month-old daughter. Greissy turned to the agency for help applying for SNAP services, vital support during one of the most difficult times of her life.
“When I started here for the first timeI started as a client. I was requesting the help of SNAP at that time. I worked part time, as did my partner. We had a two-month-old daughter. “This benefit helped us feed our family in one of the most difficult times,” Greissy shared.
Inspired by the help she received, Greissy eventually joined their team as an employee, turning her own experience into a mission to help others. Today, Greissy works as a Coordinator at Catholic Charities of Rockland Community Services, supporting other families just as she was supported in her own time.
“Now I work here, and Catholic Charities has helped me in many ways. shapesnot only as a client, but also as an employee. My daughter is now two years old, and her mother helps people there. form in the that she received support”Greissy said proudly.
Greissy’s journey is just one example of how our Catholic Charities network stands with New Yorkers every day, providing support when they need it most and empowering people to build a better future for themselves and their families.
