NIn the beginning, Earth was a paradise. The very young Martin Scorsese lived in Corona, Queens, an outskirts of New York, where his parents lived in a small, modest house, but with some grass and a patio in the back, enough to make his memory of the time and place paradisiacal. It was a great evolution compared to the turbulence of Elizabeth Street, in Manhattan’s Little Italy where many Sicilian immigrants crowded into residential spaces — they could sleep ten in each room. It was there that his grandparents had landed and his parents raised. When Marty was born, in 1947, his parents had already managed to leave that place of bad memories. But three years later, the father and the landlord were involved in a confrontation that ended in a hand-to-hand fight in the street. Little Marty watched. The father lost, humiliated, and the Scorsese family, driven out of the neighborhood, returned to Elizabeth Street.
