Passionate pricing
I see that there’s been a leak about the Hollow Knight: Silksong price and it’s really good. $20 in the US and apparently £16.75 in the UK. Considering Hollow Knight was around £12 that is a mark-up, but I think most people would agree that it’s great value and not what you would expect from the most anticipated sequel of the year.
There’s been some criticism that Team Cherry have made life difficult for fellow indie developers, by announcing their release date out of nowhere, and I get that, but if this was EA or Activision they’d be charging £70 for it, and it would’ve been rushed out five years ago.
Instead, they took their time and only released it when they were happy with it. Whether it will be worth the wait or not I don’t know but a world ruled by indie developers seems like it would be a lot better than what we’ve got now.
It’s all very well for triple-A developers to say they’re building a game out of passion, and I’m sure in a lot of cases they are, but the publishers above them… all they’ve got a passion for is money. I’d much rather give mine to an indie dev than a Take-Two exec.

Tough love
Great preview of Silent Hill f. I had no idea about all these themes and characters, so it’s really good to know that there’s going to be some depth to the story, hopefully like Silent Hill 2.

I’m very interested to see if they try to lock down what Silent Hill/the Otherworld is. Is it Hell or Purgatory? Is it a place or just a state of mind and is it in some way trying to help its victims? In Silent Hill 2 you were drawn to it out of guilt, and it seemed like all the other people were too. But it never seemed to me like you were being punished for eternity, but more like you were being forced to work your way through things.
So the fog and monsters actually attacking a village seems a bit out of character, by my understanding of what’s happening in Silent Hill f. Very interested to see how much will be explained and what will be the connections to the previous games.

GTA in space
Fun Reader’s Feature about Red Dead Redemption 3. I agree it’s definitely going to happen, although the rumour is Rockstar want to make more games now that they’ve got GTA 6 and its tech sorted out, so I wouldn’t say it’s guaranteed to be the next one.
I don’t know what they would do instead, but my bet would be something smaller and more experimental. I can’t imagine Take-Two would say no to anything Rockstar wanted to do if GTA 6 is as big as everyone expects, so they’d have the freedom to go crazy.
Personally, I’d like them to do a sci-fi game, as it’s something they’ve never really touched. I’d probably prefer it was an open world game though, so maybe that’d be too much work. But I always imagined them doing something like the film Outland, where there’s no aliens or robots and it’s all quite grounded.

Tricks of the trade
As someone that has been playing video games for a long time now there are some things I wish I didn’t know. Like knowing that at least half the time if you turn round from where you start on a level there’s almost certainly going to be something hidden behind you.
I hate this, because it’s a really boring way to start a game and yet I can’t stop myself, because I know most of the time I’ll be rewarded.
I’ve heard people complaining about not being able to stop constantly reloading, even when you don’t really need to, and I do that a bit too, but not being able to experience a level normally, as the developer properly intended gets me more annoyed.
I’m sure it’d be more cinematic to explore without constantly trying to look for secrets in every little nook and cranny, but I just can’t stop myself. By now I know how games work now but I kind of wish I didn’t.

Portable appeal
I’m curious to hear from anyone on the Inbox who is going to get an Xbox ROG Ally this year, especially the more expensive £800 one. I am in the market for a PC games machine but it’s so expensive it seems to me it’d be far more cost effective to get a gaming laptop or even desktop.
I might end up paying a bit more eventually but at least it’d be upgradeable. I get that the ROG Ally is portable ,but I can’t say that’s a particular draw for me and I’d rather put the money that goes into that into more power. Spending so much money to play PC games in a compromised portable seems pretty unappealing but maybe that’d just me being weird.

Could be worse
I think there’s a lot of truth in the Reader’s Feature about the Switch 2. Nintendo’s games and fans’ desires might coincide a lot, but I think that’s made some people assume that Nintendo is all about making their wishes come true when, really, they don’t care about that sort of thing at all.
It makes me think of the Wii era, when they weren’t really doing anything that was made for regular fans and gamers. Even the DS had a lot of non-games on it. They only gave up on that stuff because smartphones made it so that those sort of games didn’t sell anymore. Otherwise they’d probably still be making them now, instead of Metroid Prime 4 or whatever.
It’s not right to think of Nintendo as good or evil, they’re just a business doing what sells and what their developers can adapt to and make. Most of the time that means really cool video games but not always.
I don’t know why they’re being weird at the moment, but I do know they’re not doing anything that I am hugely opposed to. Not like in the Wii era or, you could argue, the Wii U.

Squirrel Man
I really hope Injustice 3 ditches all the grimdark Superman nonsense. If I was them, I wouldn’t even call it Injustice. Just make it the Justice Gang or something and officially part of the DCU. I’d rather have a squirrel saving mini-game, and Superman going around lecturing Lex Luthor to death, than more sub-Homelander stuff.
Unfortunately, the Injustice band has become quite big though, with comics and animated movies, so I think they’ll probably just carry on as they are. At the very least they need to put Question in the next one, but I doubt we even get that.

Indy gaming
The question of a new Uncharted has come up a few times recently and I’ve been thinking about what I’d like from a new game, assuming it wouldn’t be made by Naughty Dog. I did like Uncharted 4 as a game, but I think the attempt to make it seem more grounded took something away from it and made it less ‘fun’.
Naughty Dog do take themselves very seriously nowadays, so I think the best thing that could come from someone else taking over is that it would be more comedic and have supernatural elements again.
I’ll say that I didn’t particularly like Indiana Jones And The Great Circle. It was okay, but it wasn’t particularly like the movies, and I didn’t like the MacGuffin and the supernatural stuff was pretty boring – even though it was technically more out there than usual, with Indy using magic.
It just wasn’t that exciting or interesting to me and I think Uncharted at its best, in 2 and parts of 4, is a lot better at getting across that same style of action and humour.
The problem is I don’t know what developer you could get to do it, if it wasn’t Naughty Dog, which is presumably why it’s taking so long for a new game to be announced. If they find the right team, or set one up new, I think it would be worth it, because Uncharted used to be great and I’d say it had more mainstream appeal than The Last Of Us. Especially now people seem to have got fed up of the show too.

Glad to see the tradition of Collector’s Editions being an absolute waste of money are still going strong. That Metal Gear Solid Delta one is truly impressive in how bad it is, even if it did look like Snake!
Focus
I feel if they want to show off new gameplay and better graphics for Pokémon Legends: Z-A they really should’ve made it a Switch 2 exclusive. I feel it’s not going to be impressing anyone as a cross-gen game.
