The National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM) has recovered more than 225 billion pesos as a result of the fight against huachicol tax, a smuggling and tax evasion network linked to the irregular importation of fuelsreported its director, Rafael Marín Mollinedo.
In an interview at the National Palace, the official stated that there are more than seven thousand investigation files opened for this crime, in which gas stations, transporters, customs agents, businessmen and even elements of the Navy are involved.
Marín Mollinedo recognized that, Despite the progress, it has not been possible to eradicate corruption in customs, a phenomenon that he described as a “cancer” that has historically affected the system.. However, he highlighted that recent operations have made it possible to deal significant blows to smuggling and recover public resources.
“Customs were always seen as loot. The common denominator was stealing and doing business. For one peso they let thousands pass through,” said the head of ANAM.
According to the official, Fuel smuggling continues to be one of the agency’s main challenges, which is why seizures of ships, tankers and pipes linked to irregular operations continue..
Among those investigated are administrators, deputy directors and operational commanders, both civil and military. Marín Mollinedo considered that the coordination of ANAM with the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), headed by Omar García Harfuch, has been key to strengthening surveillance and control actions.
“Joint work with Security and the armed forces has made it possible to identify complete networks of corruption and fuel trafficking,” he stressed.
The owner of the ANAM He maintained that the recent results reflect a sustained effort by the Government to close the path to huachicol tax and recover the income that was lost for years due to smuggling and evasion.
Hearing of Fernando Farías canceled
The initial hearing against Navy Rear Admiral Fernando Farías Laguna, accused of organized crime and fuel smuggling – a crime known as fiscal huachicol – was canceled after the soldier did not appear before the judge.
The procedure was scheduled for this Monday, October 20, in the courts of the Altiplano Federal Penitentiary, but neither the accused nor any legal representative attended, so the federal judge in charge of the case decided to suspend the indictment hearing.
Farías Laguna, nephew of former Secretary of the Navy Rafael Ojeda Durán, during the Government of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is a fugitive from justice. Recently, a federal court revoked the protection that he had promoted to avoid the execution of an arrest warrant against him.
