Gauteng boosts Smart Driver Licence Testing Centres rollout

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport is speeding up the expansion of Smart Driver Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs) across the province to improve access to modern, efficient and corruption-free licensing services.

The initiative aims to bring services closer to communities while supporting the province’s broader road safety goals under the government’s Smart Mobility Plan.

GAUTENG TO EXPAND SMART DRIVER LICENCE TESTING CENTRES TO OFFER FASTER, CASHLESS, AND CONVENIENT SERVICES

Several Smart DLTCs are already operational, including centres in Atteridgeville, Denlyn, Maponya Mall, Centurion, Protea Glen and Midrand, with the Umphakathi Smart DLTC expected to open soon.

MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela said the new centres are transforming the licensing experience by offering online and cashless services, with licence renewals taking as little as 10 minutes.

“We are expanding Smart Licensing Centres to ensure services are closer to communities. These centres offer efficient, modern and ethical services that respond to residents’ needs,” she said.

According to the department, the Smart Driver Licence Testing Centres are fully integrated into the eNaTIS system and function as comprehensive licensing hubs, providing services such as vehicle licence renewals, driving licence applications, and renewals.

The centres also operate from Monday to Saturday, making it easier for working residents to access services without taking time off during the week.

BOOSTING ROAD SAFETY AND REDUCING CORRUPTION

The MEC said the rollout is not only about convenience but also about improving road safety across Gauteng.

“When licensing is accessible and corruption-free, more people get properly licensed instead of driving illegally or obtaining fake licences. Road safety starts with proper licensing,” Diale-Tlabela said.

Smart Driver Licence Testing Centres operate on an appointment-only basis, eliminating the use of runners and reducing opportunities for corruption. Law enforcement officials oversee operations to ensure transparency.

The department added that expanding the centres into townships, informal settlements and hostels helps reduce travel costs and congestion at traditional licensing offices.

In addition to improving service delivery, the initiative has also created jobs for young people from local communities, with most positions filled by women.
